Haven't read the SI article on Shanni Davis, but I'm not sure arrogant dickhead is really accurate. He's a complex guy.

Very distrustful of the media and his mother's influence is really sort of epic. But at the same time, he's pretty well liked in the skating community. The people from his skating club here adore him and feel he's really continued to be helpful to them. He didn't want to skate the relay in part for his own purposes, but in part because he wanted to let others have the olympic experience. He gave up his slot in the 10,000 to another american skater essentially for this reason (though I'm sure you could read it as simply being because he didn't want to be part of the team). People who know him say he has a big heart, but is also very wary of those outside his inner circle. He's easy to misinterpret because he doesn't generally put his own feelings out there. Not saying he's necessarily a great guy, I just think he's more complex and has more upside as a person than is easily visible.
