Where did he sign up to a role model?
Where did he sign up to be an inspiration and thereby choose to be held accountable to the public?
For the above two, all he did was notice he's damn good at golf and pursue it as a career, like any of us would if were that good.
For the endorsement of products, that simple business. As long as he can sell products, people will pay him to do so. If people are foolish enough to buy a product because a celebrity endorses it, then they deserve what they get.

He signed up to be a role model when he entered the world of professional sports in the United States of America. Like it or not, that's how it is.

maybe the answer is, he doesn't *have* to, but if he wants to be at the top again and make endorsement money, he probably does.

I understand, from a business/brand perspective, why he chose to make the statement.

In this case I don't think it's about us feeling entitled. But we are entitled to think he's a dick because of his behavior. If he doesn't want to

because by elevating him to the stature he holds in society, we demand that he demonstrate and reinforce our values rather than his own.
