Regarding Plushenko and Stojko's comments, I think they're right that there should be upside to doing the quad. Pushing boundaries should count. But

Plushenko lost because Lysaczeck did what he did more effectively. His jumps were much cleaner and his routine was aimed at maximizing points in a way Plushenko's wasn't. That last part is just poor planning and coaching.
