It's not being imposed on him. It's just the price of getting the upside.

He could never say another word about it. That would be his choice. And he would have to accept the consequences of that choice (fewer endorsements, a public rooting for the other guys and against him, etc.). That's apparently not what he wants, so he chose a different route.
