Is there ever a non-desperation (like non final minute or so) situation where goalies are pulled?

I mean, not that I'd advocate it, but say it was 3-0 midway through the third? If odds are you're gonna lose anyway....

I've seen it tried with around 5 minutes left in a game, team down by 3, maybe with a powerplay in a must win game.

no... 3-0 isn't that much of a deficit. pulling your goalie midway is forfeiting the game -- nm

Probably makes sense. It's like an onside kick in the third quarter. But that could never work, right? -- nm
