i think the pitcher comparison is apt. you get help from your fielders and they can cover your ass to an extent

but if you are just lobbing balls, they're going to score some runs
same in hockey - a pair of great defensemen can save your ass to an extent, but if you're leaving the net open, its over.
both are defensive positions
