Put it this way...from August 1st to the end of the season, the Mets went 44 & 18.

The Cubs were 6.5 games ahead of the Mets on August 1st.
They would have had to go 34 & 21 the rest of the way to tie the Mets final record. That's a 100 win pace necessary; and is incredible to think that still wouldn't have gotten it done all the way.
That they went 26 & 29 the rest of the way is just a manner to lend more pathos to the Cubs benchmarks of futility.
