What is it that I need to split my network port into multiple ports? A bridge? A switch? I know it's not a router.

I've run into the whole "you use a router and you create a whole different subnet" issue so I know I'm not going to use a router. But my house has ethernet in every room - which is great - but when I need to plug in four devices in the same room, I need to split that single port with... a bridge?
