For Dawson: I think of them like the checks and balances built into our government, almost.

The vows are extremely rigid, yes. And yes, some of them are virtually guaranteed to get bent and broken. Will both people always feel honored and cherished? Fuck no. And so on. So what keeps them together? Well, the other person made promises too. And they promised to love them when they are at their better, and at their worst. When the relationship is sick, and when it is healthy and happy. And that is how vows can be rigid, and yet marriages survive them breaking.
