The way I read it was that she is used to "white collar" because her family is white collar.

I didn't get anything that indicated her family was being judgmental.


She is concerned that she'll be the breadwinner. That could be an issue because it breaks with convention or because there is now additional pressure on her to pick up any slack his new job has caused in finances.


She does come off sounding elitist, but may have real, legit concerns over their financial future. If she does, she should have raised those concerns before he made the job change. So, I'm seeing communication issues as a big problem for them.

I'm not sure how to take the stuff about the mother. I does seem that he spent more time discussing the potential new job with Mom than with his wife. It might also be that Mom, as others said, has connections. That still leaves things sounding like the wife didn't have much input.

So, I think she's right to be concerned at the seeming lack of input she had in the decision, but wrong to poo-poo manual labor
