Interesting parallel between 1978 & 2010 Oscars

Both years had a very popular science fiction film that shattered box office records and were nominated for best picture. Both ended up losing to much smaller movies (Annie Hall & Hurt Locker) that grossed much less than the typical best picture winner. Coincidence or could there be a backlash against popular science fiction films by most branches of the academy where they wanted to send a message that grosses are irrelevant?
