There is a bloated opinion among critics and awards voters that the masses don't "get" art. Based on this premise, an item or artist that generates commercial success is considered unworthy of the prestige of their award. It is simply elitist snobbery designed to allow them to feel better about themselves because they are not part of the popular clique.
