I think the thing most students learn too late is that the professor is not just there to dump facts on you.

My worst professors were the ones who just recited notes to us. I'll just read the book if you're going to do that. Obsessing about taking down notes is entirely missing the point, and you'll likely miss what the professor should be trying to do, which is teach you how to come about those facts, and what those facts mean.
