Remember that story about the fire 2 of my friends were trapped in, 1 of whom who died? Apparently it was a careless freak accident.

Cecilia and Danny, who has a 5 year old son, were seeing each other, somewhat dating.

Danny, a classic hippie with head full of massive dreadlocks, had a case of lice. As a classic hippie, he didn't believe in modern medicine or just wanted to do things "the old way" and decided to get rid of the lice by rubbing gasoline on his dreadlocks.

However, he decided to do it *inside* Cecilia's palapa house, which is made of a thatched roof and wood pole walls. Gasoline is not only a liquid, but also a gas, filling the palapa and turning it into a ticking bomb.

After his labor, Danny decided to wash his hands or take a shower or something, and turned on the water boiler. Heat heat heat, and a fireball raged through the house in less than 2 seconds. Both ran out of the house but Danny and his deadlocks was obviously doused in gasoline.

Cecilia suffered many 2nd degree burns and one 3rd degree burn by trying to put out Danny. Danny went to the hospital for 2 days but perished soon after.

I still can't believe it.

Horrible news: In January, I stayed with a wonderful girl in her traditional palapa house in Puerto Morelos (30min from Cancun).

Cecilia is a playful girl from Buenos Aires who fell in love with Mexico and started her own pizza shop on the beach called "Pizza N Love." At a party, she introduced me to one of her friends, one of which was a very alternative but intelligent guy with a son of equally interesting background. The 5 year old son was obviously very, very much loved by his young father, and was already fluent in Spanish, French, and English. Both were incredibly hospitable and nice to me. Last night I found out that on February 18, the palapa house (made of dried thatched roof and wood pole walls) caught on fire. Cecilia suffered many serious burns to her legs, abdomen, and arms. Danny, however, did not survive the accident and left this world 2 days after the fire. Below is a link with a bit more detail about the incident. TIA in advance for your well wishes.
