and single moms, especially back then with an infant, were still in that shock period of 'social adjustment' IE: they couldn't hang out with their single friends and go dancing or whatever all the single ladies do, much too poor for a baby sitter, they were just so isolated, all they saw was their own mom, maybe the baby daddy, and a few folks from around the dumpy apartment they lived at. ok this was way before internets but still
