Borderlands question...

When you hit level 50, do you continue to acquire experience points or does the game stop tracking them when you're at the level max? I ask because I'm going to hit 50 well before I finish my second playthrough. I'm wondering if I should go ahead and get the DLC that allows for level 61 growth.
