Unfortunately, jumptheshark.com is no longer active, but casting Ted McGinley was one of the ways a show could jump the shark

Other methods include two characters with sexual tension doing it (like Lois & Clark), and casting younger cuter family members as the young cute family member grows up and is no longer cute (Cosby Show, Brady Bunch)
