A lot certainly depends on your definition of "punish" the traditional idea of "Hell" really isn't well supported in the Bible.

It probably owes more to Dante than the Apostles. My preferred theory on "punishment" is that it's just self-imposed distancing from God's glory. It's kind of like the difference between "behave or I'll beat you to within an inch of your life" and "if you behave you can have ice cream"
