with or without religion. But God's gift of eternal life is also there, free for the taking for anyone who wants it. If you don't, that's your free will choice to make. But if you do take it, there's an eternal reward.
The key to enjoying that reward, is to understand the magnitude of it. The magnitude of our sin, and as such, the magnitude of God's love in giving us the gift.
Once we really appreciate that, we *want* to change our lives to be better *because* God gave us that gift, not in order to earn it or to someone put ourselves better than anyone else. As pure heartfelt thanks for loving is unconditionally.
The parental analogy is an excellent one and God is a better father than I could ever be, always there to offer help and guidance no matter what wrong I might do.
