It changes state by state, but there are heavier penalties (up to licence suspension) for those over a certain limit (eg 0.15) or for repeat offenders -- nm

I actually don't know. my impression is that it's more lenient than canada, if only because it seems to be a bigger problem. -- nm

I believe that as well, so I would imagine there's less disincentive to drive drunk. In Canada, I think the one-year suspension is a strong deterent.
