This is a gambit by Amaro. I'm certain of that.

He has someone in his front office leak that they're thinking about it prior to the season. Then, he meticulously denies it. With the idea out there, the hope is that it percolates in the minds of Cardinals fans. If they just randomly trade Pujols, there is outrage throughout their fandom. Giving them a few months to allow for this possibility makes it less incendiary. In moments of frustration with the team and maybe even the player, it doesn't seem as crazy and that's what he wants. If the Cardinals are not in the race at the deadline, Amaro is now in a position to make an offer that puts the best pitcher in the game and the best hitter in the game on the same team.
This is a devious, clever machination and it doesn't hurt anything to try. Even so, ESPN knows this is a garbage report and they only run it in order to direct traffic to their various enterprises. Now, they can run infinite refutations of the story on their shows and web site not just this week but from now until the trade deadline(s). It's manufactured journalism.
