they jumped into the war stuff 30mins in. They tried to establish characters in the first 30mins but it wasn't enough to care about them let alone identify them. Then they jump right into some pretty barbaric stuff. Maybe that was the point...they went from having dinner at home to some intense killing in short order. I just can't help think it was pretty shoddy writing in the first episode.
