for the house thing, I saw an Oprah (leave me alone!) a couple of years ago where they put lie to some popular tips.

Nate Berkus, interior designer in residence for her, helped a couple who was having a very hard time selling their house.
some of the usual tips were ok (cleaning, etc.); but putting warm colors on the walls and having displays of meaningful photos and such did more for sales than the bare walls with white/beige paint did.
