I can see how it does in some cases, and adds nothing in others.

"I went to the movies with Adam, Brian and Callum". Adding a comma here is redundant because A, B and C are obviously different people
But "I went to the movies with Adam, a doctor and a surgeon" needs one. "Adam, a doctor and a surgeon" implies that Adam is both a doctor and a surgeon while "Adam, a doctor, and a surgeon" says I went to the movies with three other people.
