Not really. Plus, all the residencies in the specialty you want may be full (or only have a few spots left). Nobody wants to end up in a specialty

they have no interest in. You residency you go into is the specialty you will practice in. So if you train for family medicine, you can't do surgery or anything else.
Sure, there is plenty of family medicine residencies to go around (probably in undesirable locations). But for the other specialties, you are pretty much out of luck.
