You want a laptop? I'd agree with the choice of a HP. The only thing I don't like about them is the on switch.

It's more of a sliding trigger than a button, and it's totally a pain in the ass.
If you want a desktop, the Dell XPS 420 is the ONLY choice on my radar right now. This will be my next desktop.
If you're going smaller than a laptop (not a desktop replacement), I recommend HIGHLY the HP tx1200 laptop/tablet PC. It's about $1,000 and it's the cheapest tablet out there by about a thousand dollars (seriously, something about using plastic components rather than metal). I own this.
If you want a netbook, I'd recommend the Dell Inspiron Mini 9. I'm not particularly fond of netbooks because I feel that for about the same price, if you're bargain hunting, you can get a much more powerful laptop that weighs not much more.
