I grew up with a mother who was very self-sufficient, and she did a lot because my father was such a lazy SOB that it wouldn't get done if someone didn't do it. I remember my mother stripping the wallpaper from the walls and putting up the new paper, fixing a leak under the sink, mowing the (huge) lawn, etc. If she waited for my father to do it, she'd be waiting forever.

My mother is a ginormous pain in the ass for a variety of reasons, but I do thank her for showing me that I don't *need* a man to do stuff for me, ya know?

Hell, I *begged* my father to show me a few years ago how to change the oil in my car. It wasn't something I planned on doing all the time - but I wanted to know how it was done. He told me I should just go to Jiffy Lube and have them do it. That was his answer. I finally got my boyfriend at the time to show me how it was done.
