I'm not sure how good a hitter someone would need to be for the math to work out in favor of a walk there.

You're basically saying that the expected run output of letting Pujols bat is in excess of the expected run output of letting the guy behind him bat, plus a full run. I would think his OPS would need to approach like 1.5 or higher for that to work out in favor of walking him.
