my brother asked the vet to do an autopsy and they found that he had gotten pretty extensive cancer and even IF they had known about it - the chemo treatment wouldn't have saved him - only extended his life a bit and probably not much quality due to the side effects. So - his collapse that day was the first sign of any troubles at all - he was 9 years old - and had a very loving and happy life. My brother's still taking it very hard - thinks he should have known somehow. :( But I am happy the dog didn't suffer at all ... when I stayed with the dogs over Christmas they were both totally normal and happy as could be together. I mostly feel bad for the dog left behind as they were brother/sister.
