Keep an eye on Best Buy and stuff like that for appliances; I got a stove/microwave, dishwasher and fridge for $2000 through one of their combo-deals.

Cabinets can be done relatively cheaply (mine was $2750 for a 12ft wall top and bottom)

I got a nice countertop for $2000 (again 12' long with edging and stuff) that wasn't a marble or granite but was a lot better than formica or linoleum from Lowes.
