Find a skilled contractor, someone who has a sterling reputation, and spend the money.

You can go through Lowes, and they will oversee the project, but understand that they are probably hiring on price and you will get adequate but not superb quality in the work.
Hiring a contract that has a reputation for quality work (check BBB for complaints, resolutions, etc) will go a long way in assuring that the job gets done right the first time, on time, on budget.
