So my wife ran out yesterday and bought an ipad. Played with it a little. It's a fun little toy, but I stand by my thoughts on it so far.

It actually makes some sense for her. She just doesn't need much computing power and her existing laptop is dying. She can do most of what she needs on it (because most of her work uses are web based or just email) and the lighter weight is nice because she needs to carry it around a good bit. But it really can't substitute for other devices (other than a kindle) for more active users. So it's another thing. Nice to have if you don't mind the extra cost. It's kind of like owning a boat (though obviously on a much smaller scale). It's nice and fun but you don't need it and you have to be willing to absorb the cost.

One caveat, I do think there are great uses and opportunities for students with it (getting text books this way).
