In a flat, monotone, matter-of-fact email. "User X verbally expressed some unknown personal issue with me to coworker Y, and 30 minutes later I

assisted User X to the best of my ability. Only later did I learn of his personal opinion of me, from a third party. I do not know how he reached this opinion of my professional skills, but I believe it to be demonstrably untrue. In addition, I have acted with consummate professionalism whilst dealing with this user, and I want that to be noted in writing for future reference."

Or something like that.
