Fox, in their infinite wisdom, had Idol run 28 minutes late, and then Glee on from approx. 9:28-10:28.
As far as I can tell, it was done for one of a few reasons. To manipulate the ratings numbers in whatever way suits their purpose. They want to try and put a dent in one of the competing shows at 10:00. They wanted to send a "screw you" message to the affiliates that threatened not to air Conan if Fox signed him.
Or, they have too many people on Idol, and they needed extra time for it.
