Oh, one more thing ... if you want to have the news permantently hidden (when you're recognized by the site, at least), go to change info ...

... there's a new option to hide the news box. Whenever the site confirms your identity (and creates a login session), the news will always default to hidden, regardless of whether there is new news or not.
For average users, hitting "hide" will hide it for 30 days via a cookie - however, if the news changes in that timeframe for any reason, then it will pop open again - because, hey, it's new news. That's why they call it "news".
Also, news permanently defaults to hidden when viewing posts. Just kinda silly to have it visible there, as loosi pointed out :)
