The plan isn't to scuttle space travel, or even completely cancel Constellation. The Orion capsule is still contining.

Constellation was overbudget and behind schedule, so it's being reworked. Sure, it sucks that Constellation is taking a hit, but it's a realistic and pragmatic cut. In 5 years perhaps things look different and can be restarted.
So who's the one being ignorant and ridiculous?
