...Catching the average Canadian sports fans' attention. Also, there was an internal policy change made last year that actual paid attendance would be announced, unlike other years where there was plenty of paper in the number.
The Jays are safe for now and there's money to go for a run when the GM and President say the time is right. I'd pencil in 2012 myself for when that will happen. Until then, they'll just keep going as is and the crowds will improve in June, July & August if the team seems frisky enough to get a win on any given night.
The President of Rogers Communications - the Jays owner and their broadcaster - recently told the Toronto media that the Jays losses this year will be but a rounding error on their spreadsheet, so it's not like they're giving up on the team.
