I guess it would depend on the complexity of the design, but I'm sure it will be fine.

I doubt a swung tool could bounce high enough and with enough force to damage anything in the femur region, a few toes? that you can live with

I'd probably start with the pickaxe (the hoe implement) to break the ground and then use a trenching shovel.
