It's very slowly paced, things are just allowed to happen. Languid is the word I'd use. At the same time, it's a fascinating look at 1960 without the rose-colored nostalgic glasses most shows/movies use about that time period.
Sexism is rampant, though it really isn't "sexism" per se, just more "how it was." I actually thought the female roles were interesting for showing how some women got by, and got ahead, in a VERY male dominated world.
