there's only about 15 minutes of Moulin Rougey type Baz wackiness in the beginning. the rest is pretty conventional epic love story
the first half is better than the second half, and it works better when it's being an outback western than when it's being Pearl Harbor
and even though I'm not usually a Nicole fan, she more than holds her own. Hugh's character is more one-note but he plays that one note winningly
i don't think it's as love it or hate it as Moulin Rogue. if you like big screen spectacle, with all the good and bad that the genre comes with, it more than delivers
