Oh, definitely. I go through that with the 13 y.o. too. I'm constantly asking him why he must argue with me about everything.

When he really starts to dig his heels in, I often say "Really? *This* is what you want to fight about?" Because it's almost always something stupid.
And sometimes they just need to be punished. But wherever possible, I still try to explain myself, even if it is at a later time or date.
