i think also the nature of the combat in the different theaters makes a narrative difference

in europe, there was a general progression from Normandy through France through Germany on the march to Berlin
in the pacific, it seems like there was a lot of island hopping and just plunking the soldiers down on these outcroppings of rock and telling them to take the island
something about that doesn't seem to make for as much of a flowing story as the european campaign
