i do this shit for consumers for a living
the original company may be okay but once it goes to collections the fun is just beginning - let me know where you are in 6 months and then 12 months.
my advice to clients is usually to tell them:
1) i am recording this conversation
2) go fuck yourself
3) sue me
not always in that order
