51st state?

The Majority Leader of the House of Representatives, Steny Hoyer (D-Maryland), today announced that the Puerto Rico Democracy Act, authored by the Resident Commissioner, Pedro Pierluisi, will be voted on by the full House next week. (i.e. this week)

Through H.R. 2499, Congress would formally consult the U.S. citizens of Puerto Rico regarding the Islands political status for the first time in 112 years. Eligible voters would be asked whether they wish to maintain the current political status or to have a different status. If a majority of voters favor a change in status, the government of Puerto Rico would be authorized to conduct a second plebiscite among the three alternative status options: independence, statehood, and sovereignty in association with the United States.
