To even *think* of comparing MF's Phil to Friends' Ross is a nut-punch-worthy crime.

It is wrong on *every* conceivable level.
Responses:
Phil is obviously a more believable and grounded Michael Scott character. -- nm

That's nearly as offensive as the Ross comparison. ugh.

You don't see Michael Scott in him at all? Especially the early episodes. -- nm

I can see the thing about need to be liked in the pilot....but it is so un-ridiculous (a la Michael Scott) that I never felt any connection. (nm)

Someone needs to go back and especially watch the first three or four eps. They've toned it down, but I promise...

I've watched them numerous times. I just disagree.

That's people trying to peg his character into a type. Phil is much closer to Bryan Cranston's dad on Malcolm than to Michael Scott, imo. (nm)

Actually thinking about it, that doesn't really work either.

All of that trying to be hip with the kids, "Why the face?," etc. is right out of the Michael Scott playbook. -- nm

They took the absolute need to be liked from Michael Scott and toned it down to realistic levels and gave him more of a heart. -- nm

Exactly. It was set up perfectly by the prior revelation about Claire's anniversary "gift". He's so anti-michael scott.
