only the first incident was described as an abusive one, but they didn't say it was more than that one time.

there was extremely poor behavior, to be sure, and especially what impacted the kids is totally inexcusable; but it doesn't sound like there was ongoing abuse.
i would never criticize victims of that for not getting out at once, as i know of the manipulations that are often part of that.
the bulk of the story was about wives leaving when things go bad.
