US unusuccesfully tried to buy Delta a few years back (before the DL/NW merger). Delta wanted none of it.

US and United tried to merge many years back, I believe, but it got turned down by regulators.
For the past several years, the US/United rumors keep flying, but they were generally believed to just be to get Continental to start talking to United again, because that's who United really wants to merge with.
