from bb - scorpion is right, resistance bands are another option for starting strength training.

that's what physical therapists had me start with, then moved to small hand weights.
I can't resist (ha): There are plenty of women for whom a pound is the place to start, not including disabled or those rebuilding after injuries or surgeries. hasn't everyone seen the tips on tv or in magazines re: starting off using cans of vegetables or the like? those are about a pound each.
it's not that they can't lift a can, it's that going through different motions, those that aren't part of day-to-day activity, targets muscles differently and different muscles. you aim for a number of reps, and when those become easier, you load more weight/use tighter bands.
