Believe me these days its a hell of a lot easier, I mean I did it before there was even battery powered tv, now with wifi and 3g.

Yes gym membership is essential, so is having a place to hangout that doesn't require getting drunk. I belonged to the gem/mineral society and would work on stuff, that and movies.

You need to rent space witth someone for kitchen priviledges, occasional shower recharge batteries (literally)
