You know something? The more I debate this party subsidy, the more I'm changing my position on them.

Some easy numbers:

In the last election:

3.633 million Liberal voters
2.515 million NDP voters
1.379 million Bloc voters
937,613 Green voters

If even 5% of those voters (just one in every twenty people) gave just $50 per year, the donation would cost them a grand total of $12.50 after they completed the extremely difficult task of filling out one extra space on their annual tax return.

And those donations would result in:

$9,082,500 in annual funding for the Liberals,

$6,287,500 for the NDP,

$3,447,500 for the Bloc,

$2,344,032 for the Greens.

So for the cost of less than two McDick's Value Meals per year, 5% of Canadians could fund the parties themselves.

I'm starting to think this is less about "preserving democracy and a level playing field" and more "someone else should pay it, even if that someone else is Ottawa".
